    Help & FAQ

    Where are my notes stored?
Saved in this browser's local storage, on your device. By default they are never uploaded, no account is needed, and nothing tracks you. Clearing your browser data removes them, so back them up with Export JSON in the ⋮ menu of the My Puzzle Texts drawer. Cloud sync is optional and end-to-end encrypted.
    What can I keep here?
Anything text-based you want handy: ciphertexts, recovered keys, custom alphabets, intermediate decodings, GC or TB codes, coordinates, hint translations, and your own scratch notes. Up to about 5 MB total per browser. Text only, in any language or alphabet. Binary files like .gwc cartridges, images, PDFs, or audio cannot be stored, though JSON snippets work fine as text.
How do I use this editor?
Click + New to start a note; edits autosave to this browser. Press Done to close a note back to the list. Drag the ⋮⋮ handle to reorder, and the order syncs to your other devices. Copy puts a note's text on your clipboard. The same notes show in the drawer on every tool page, where you can also insert a note straight into a tool's input field.
Can I sync across my devices?
Optionally, yes. Open Account, create an account with a username and passphrase, and your notes are end-to-end encrypted in your browser before they upload, so we can never read them. Sign in on another device with the same username and passphrase to see the same notes. Keep your recovery key safe, it is the only way back in if you forget your passphrase.
Is it private? What should I not store here?
Your notes are end-to-end encrypted in your browser, so we cannot read them, and we never see your passphrase, the server keeps only a salted hash that proves you know it, never the passphrase itself. We do store your username, since it identifies your account when you sign in. Please do not store passwords, financial details, or other truly sensitive data here. This feature is provided as is, with no warranty, and we are not responsible for any lost data. If you lose both your passphrase and your recovery key, your synced notes cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
    What is Lock mode?
A signed-in option in the Account panel that encrypts your notes at rest on this device. When it is on, your notes are sealed once the tab closes and you unlock them once per session with your passphrase. It protects data at rest, not while the page is open.
How do I back up or move my notes?
Use Export JSON (backup) and Import JSON (restore, or move between browsers) from the ⋮ menu of the My Puzzle Texts drawer. A backup contains your notes only, never your account credentials.

Notes are shared across all CacheSleuth tools in the same browser. Open the site in another browser or device and you will start with an empty list unless you sign in to sync, that is by design.
